YouTube thumbnail preview: see your thumbnail and title where viewers see them

Pick your thumbnail and type the title to see them in a home feed, search results, the suggested list and a phone feed, in light or dark mode. Put a real video next to yours and save the picture.

More options

Its thumbnail, title, channel, length and upload date are drawn next to yours. View counts are not shown for it.

This YouTube thumbnail preview tool shows your thumbnail and title the way viewers meet them: in a home feed and search results on a computer, in the suggested videos list next to a playing video, and in a phone feed. Pick your image, type the title and channel name, and switch between layouts and between light and dark mode. The title is wrapped and cut at two lines, as a real card does, so you see which words survive. Add the length, views and upload age for a realistic card, put a real video next to yours by pasting its link, and save the result as a PNG to share with your team. The image is drawn in your browser and never uploaded.

How does the thumbnail preview work?

Everything is drawn on a canvas in your browser. Each layout is a plain look-alike of a YouTube card: a rounded 16:9 image, a duration badge, a round channel picture with the channel's first letter, the title, the channel name and a line of views and upload age. We do not copy YouTube's logo, icons or screens. The sizes come from our own approximations of YouTube's layouts in October 2026, and they are the same numbers the title length checker uses, so both tools agree on where a title is cut.

Thumbnail width in CSS pixels in each layout of the preview (our approximations of YouTube in October 2026). In the suggested list your image is less than half as wide as in the feed.

Worked example from our test on 26 October 2026: a 1280 x 720 test image with the 71-character title "How to Calculate the Total Length of Any YouTube Playlist in 10 Seconds", channel PlaylistTime, length 8:42, 12,400 views (drawn as 12.4K views) and "3 days ago", next to the real video dQw4w9WgXcQ, whose title, channel, length (3:34) and upload date ("17 years ago") came from the API. In the computer home feed and the phone feed both titles showed in full on two lines. In the suggested list both were cut: ours after "in 10", the other after "(4K". That is the layout to design the first words for.

How to preview a YouTube thumbnail

Step 1: Pick your thumbnail

Choose the image or drop it on the box. It is drawn in your browser and never uploaded.

Step 2: Type the title and channel

The title wraps and gets cut the way a two-line card cuts it. Add the length, views and upload age under More options.

Step 3: Switch layouts and themes

Look at the home feed, search, the suggested list and the phone feed, in light and dark.

Step 4: Compare and save

Add a real video's link to see yours next to it, then save the PNG or copy a share link.

How a thumbnail looks on mobile vs desktop

On a phone the thumbnail fills the width of the screen, about 375 pixels on many phones, and the title runs below it beside the channel picture. On a computer the home feed shows three or more cards in a row, each about 360 pixels wide. In the suggested list beside a playing video the image is small, about 168 pixels wide, which is where busy thumbnails and small text fail first. Check the Suggested tab before you settle on text size.

Light mode vs dark mode

Many viewers use YouTube in dark mode. A thumbnail with a black or very dark edge can melt into a dark feed, and a white one into a light feed. Switch the theme to check that your image still has a clear edge and that the title is readable next to it in both.

Compare your thumbnail with a real video

Open More options, paste the link of a video you compete with, and press Add. Its thumbnail, title, channel, length and upload date are drawn next to yours, so you see both the way a viewer choosing between them would. The video's details come from the official YouTube Data API through PlaylistTime's server (cached for an hour); its view count is not shown. The thumbnail belongs to that video's creator: use the picture for your own comparison, not on your own video.

What makes a good YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube's own thumbnail and title tips suggest: think about who the video is for (familiar faces for subscribers, universal actions and emotions for new viewers), use the rule of thirds, add branding and easy-to-read text, do not make the design too complex, and upload the image as large as possible because thumbnails show differently across devices. They also suggest titles that are short with the important words first, and limiting ALL CAPS and emoji. YouTube says 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. After publishing, compare click-through rate on Home and Suggested in YouTube Analytics in the first 24 hours.

Thumbnails for vertical videos and Shorts

YouTube Help says a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail gets an automatic 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages, while your thumbnail still shows on the watch feed, in watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This preview shows 16:9 cards. For Shorts, see the Shorts safe zone and the Shorts thumbnail grabber.

Does the thumbnail need to be a certain size first?

Any image works for the preview. Before uploading, check it with the thumbnail size checker: YouTube asks for 16:9, at least 640 pixels wide, JPG or PNG, and under 2 MB from a phone.

How accurate is this preview?

It is a close look-alike, not a screenshot. Card sizes, fonts and spacing are approximations, and YouTube's real layout changes with screen size, zoom, app version, experiments and language. Text is drawn in Roboto when your device has it and Arial otherwise. Use it to judge readability, contrast and where the title is cut, not exact pixels. YouTube's own Test and compare feature in YouTube Studio is the way to measure which thumbnail viewers actually pick.

Why we built this thumbnail preview tool

Most thumbnail testers show the image in one fake feed, often with the old layout, and ask you to upload the file to their server. Nitin Raja, who builds PlaylistTime, tested a lot of these pages before building this one: after testing out a lot of websites, he found what people need and what they do not, and built around that. People need their own thumbnail and title in the places viewers actually decide, in both themes, next to a real competing video, without sending the image anywhere.

Questions

How can I preview my YouTube thumbnail before uploading?

Pick the image in the preview tool above and type the title. It shows the thumbnail in a home feed, search, the suggested list and a phone feed, in light or dark mode.

Is my thumbnail uploaded?

No. The image is drawn in your browser and never leaves your device. Only a compared video's details are fetched from YouTube's API.

Can I compare my thumbnail with another video?

Yes. Paste the other video's link under More options and press Add. Its thumbnail, title, channel, length and upload date are drawn next to yours.

Why is my title cut off in the preview?

Cards show two lines of title. The preview measures your title in each layout and cuts it with an ellipsis where a two-line card would. Put the key words first.

Does this look exactly like YouTube?

It is a generic look-alike with approximate sizes, not a copy of YouTube's screens, so expect small differences. It is made for judging readability and contrast.

Can I save the preview?

Yes. Save PNG downloads the current layout at twice the screen resolution, ready to share.
