PlaylistTime / Tag extractor
YouTube tag extractor: see the tags on any video and copy them
Paste a YouTube video or Shorts link to see the tags the creator added, copy them all or one at a time, and check them against YouTube's 500-character limit.
More options: several videos or a whole channel
This YouTube tag extractor shows the tags a creator added to a video. Tags are hidden on YouTube itself, but they are part of the video's public data, so the tool can read them from YouTube's official API. Paste a video or Shorts link to see every tag, copy them all at once or one by one, and see how many of YouTube's 500 characters they use, counted the way YouTube counts. You also get the video's category, its title and audio language, and the length of its title and description.
Under More options you can paste up to 50 video links, or a channel, to see which tags it uses most across its latest 50 uploads.
How does the tag extractor work?
The tool takes the 11-character video ID from your link and asks YouTube's Data API for the video's details. The tags list in the answer is exactly what the creator typed in YouTube Studio, in their order. If the list is missing, the video has no tags, and the tool says so instead of making some up.
Worked example: counting characters the way YouTube does
YouTube's limit is 500 characters for all tags together, and it counts two things people forget: the comma between tags, and quotes around any tag that contains a space. YouTube's API documentation gives the example that the tag Foo Baz counts as nine characters, while Foo-Baz counts as seven. On 26 October 2026, the official Rick Astley video dQw4w9WgXcQ had 27 tags. Counted that way they use 495 of 500 characters, so there was room for only five more.
How to see the tags on a YouTube video, step by step
1. Copy the video link
On a computer, copy the address bar or use Share, then Copy. In the YouTube app, tap Share, then Copy link. Shorts links work too.
2. Paste it above and press Get tags
The tags appear as chips, in the creator's order.
3. Copy what you need
Copy all puts every tag on the clipboard separated by commas, ready to paste into YouTube Studio. Click a single tag to copy just that one.
4. Check several videos or a channel
Open More options to paste up to 50 links, or a channel, and see the most used tags.
How to see tags on YouTube videos without a tool
YouTube does not show tags on the watch page. On a computer you can still find them in the page source: open the video, press Ctrl+U (or Cmd+Option+U on a Mac), search for keywords, and read the list. It is fiddly and shows nothing on a phone, which is why a tag extractor is quicker.
How to see tags on YouTube Shorts
Shorts are videos with the same data, so paste the youtube.com/shorts/... link above and the tool reads their tags the same way. Many Shorts have no tags at all and rely on the title and hashtags instead.
YouTube tags character limit: 500 characters
YouTube allows up to 500 characters of tags per video, and the count includes commas between tags and the quotes YouTube adds around tags with spaces. That means 20 two-word tags of 12 characters each (counting the space) use 20 x (12 + 2) + 19 = 299 characters, not 240. The bar under each video's tags shows its count against the limit. YouTube's titles allow 100 characters and descriptions 5,000 bytes; letters outside basic English, such as accented letters or Hindi, Japanese and emoji, take more than one byte each, so the tool shows both characters and bytes.
YouTube tags vs hashtags
- Tags are hidden keywords set in YouTube Studio. Viewers do not see them.
- Hashtags are words starting with
#in the title or description. They are visible and clickable.
The tool lists both: the tags, and any hashtags it finds in the title and description.
Do YouTube tags help views?
Not much, by YouTube's own account. YouTube's help page on tags says the title, thumbnail and description are more important for discovery, and that tags matter mostly when a word is often misspelled. So copying a popular video's tags will not copy its views. Tags are still useful for research: they show which words a creator thinks describe the video, and across a channel they show the topics it targets.
Find the tags a channel uses most
Paste a channel under More options and the tool reads its latest 50 uploads and counts how many of them use each tag, ignoring capital letters. On 26 October 2026, all 50 of Veritasium's latest uploads had tags, with veritasium, science and physics among them. The same check on MrBeast found no tags on any of his latest 50 uploads, which shows how often big channels skip them. You can copy the top 30 at once. It is a quick way to see a channel's main topics, or to check your own tags are consistent.
What the category and language mean
The category is the one the creator picked, such as Music, Education or Gaming, shown with YouTube's US English category name. The title language is the language the creator set for the title and description, and the audio language is the spoken language of the default audio track. Both are often not set.
How accurate is it?
- Tags, category and languages come straight from YouTube's official API, so they match YouTube Studio.
- Private and deleted videos cannot be read. Unlisted videos can, if you have the link.
- The character count follows YouTube's documented rule: commas count, and tags with spaces count as if quoted.
- A video with no tags simply has none; nothing is guessed or generated.

Why we built this tag extractor
Most tag tools are tag generators in disguise, padding real tags with invented ones and hiding the fact that many videos have none. Nitin Raja, who builds PlaylistTime, tested a lot of these pages before building this one: after testing out a lot of websites, he found what people need and what they do not, and built around that. What people need is the real list, a clean way to copy it, and an honest count against YouTube's limit, so that is what this page does.
What this extractor reads
- The video's tags, category, title language, audio language, title and description from YouTube's official Data API.
- The tag character count using YouTube's documented rule, title length in characters, description length in characters and bytes, and hashtags in the title and description.
- For several videos or a channel: how many videos use each tag, and the average number of tags and characters.
- What it does not do: it does not generate tags, does not show search volumes, and stores nothing you paste.
Why it is different
| This extractor | Typical tag tools | |
|---|---|---|
| Tags shown | Only the video's real tags | Often mixed with generated suggestions |
| Videos without tags | Says so plainly | Often fills the gap with invented tags |
| Character count | YouTube's rule: commas and quotes count | Often a plain letter count |
| Several videos and channels | Up to 50 links, or a channel's latest 50 uploads | One video at a time |
Questions
How do I see the tags on a YouTube video?
Paste the video's link into the tag extractor on this page and press Get tags. YouTube hides tags on the watch page, but they are part of the video's public data, which the tool reads from YouTube's official API.
Why does a video show no tags?
Because it has none. Many creators leave tags empty, since YouTube says the title, thumbnail and description matter more for discovery. The tool never invents tags to fill the gap.
What is the character limit for YouTube tags?
500 characters for all tags together. Commas between tags count, and a tag with a space counts as if it had quotes around it, so the tag Foo Baz counts as nine characters.
Can I see the tags on YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/ link; Shorts have tags like any other video, though many have none.
Is it OK to copy another video's tags?
Tags are public data and copying them is common, but it rarely helps: YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery. Use them as research and write tags that describe your own video.
What is the difference between tags and hashtags?
Tags are hidden keywords set in YouTube Studio. Hashtags are words starting with # in the title or description, which viewers see and can click. The tool shows both.
Can I extract tags from a whole channel?
Yes. Open More options and paste the channel. The tool reads its latest 50 uploads and lists the tags it uses most, with how many videos use each.
