YouTube handle checker: is this @handle available?

Type a handle to see whether a channel already uses it, whether it follows YouTube's handle rules, and which simple variants are still free.

More options

To check several handles at once, type up to 10 in the box, separated by commas or spaces. Similar handles are suggested only when you check one.

This YouTube handle checker tells you whether an @handle is available before you try to claim it. Type the handle and it asks YouTube, through the official YouTube Data API, whether any channel answers to it. If one does, you see that channel. If none does, the handle looks available, and the checker also tests the spelling against YouTube's published handle rules: length, allowed characters, where periods and underscores may go, and handles that look like web addresses or phone numbers. When a handle is taken, it checks six simple variants for you, and you can check up to 10 handle ideas at once. It is a quick YouTube username availability check for a new channel or a rename.

How does the YouTube handle checker work?

YouTube's Data API has a lookup called channels.list with a forHandle parameter: give it a handle and it returns the channel that uses it, or nothing. The checker runs that lookup for each handle you type. In parallel it runs the rules from YouTube's help page on handles, so you also learn whether a free handle could actually be chosen.

Worked example from our tests on 26 October 2026:

How to check if a YouTube handle is available

Step 1: Type the handle

Type the handle you want, with or without the @. To compare several ideas, type up to 10 separated by commas.

Step 2: Press Check handle

The checker asks YouTube which channel, if any, uses each handle, and checks the spelling against YouTube's published rules.

Step 3: Read the verdict

Taken shows the channel that has it. Looks available means no channel answers to it right now; the rules list shows anything YouTube would reject.

Step 4: Try a variant

If it is taken, pick one of the similar handles marked as available, then claim it in YouTube Studio under Customization, Profile, Handle.

YouTube handle rules

These are the rules from YouTube Help, checked on 26 October 2026. The checker tests each of them.

RuleWhat YouTube says
Length3 to 30 characters. Handles in Han (Chinese characters) or Hangul (Korean): 1 to 10. Ethiopic, Hiragana or Katakana: 2 to 20. Mixed scripts may have other limits.
CharactersLetters or numbers from one of the 75 supported languages, plus underscores (_), hyphens (-), periods (.) and Latin middle dots (·)
SeparatorsUnderscores, hyphens, periods and middle dots cannot be at the start or the end
LookNot URL-like and not phone number-like
ScriptsLeft-to-right and right-to-left scripts cannot be mixed, except for numbers added at the end
CaseNot case-sensitive
UniquenessNot already used; each channel has one handle
ContentMust follow the Community Guidelines: no violent, offensive or spammy handles, and handles cannot be sold or transferred

How long is a YouTube handle?

A new handle has 3 to 30 characters in most languages. The handles of the biggest channels are mostly short. Here is how many characters the handles of the most-subscribed channels have:

0917263471-5176-8349-112012-141615-18619-30Characters after the @

Why does YouTube say a handle is not available?

YouTube Help gives two reasons when a handle is refused: another channel already uses it, or it does not meet the naming guidelines. In practice that covers:

What to do if your YouTube handle is taken

YouTube's help page suggests adding periods, numbers or underscores. Other simple options are a word about your topic or your country, or "the" in front. When you check a single handle that is taken, the checker tries six of these variants (for example thename, nametv, name_yt, name1) and marks which are free. Keep it short and easy to say: people type handles into search and say them out loud.

One limit: a variant must not pose as the channel that already has the handle. YouTube's impersonation policy names adding words like "Official" or "Real" to pretend to be the authentic version of another channel, and copying another channel's picture or banner, as impersonation. That is why the checker never suggests those words.

Can I take a handle from an inactive channel?

No. YouTube's rules do not allow handles to be sold or transferred, and there is no form to claim a handle from someone else's channel, even if it has not posted for years. A handle only becomes free when its channel changes it (after the 14-day hold), deletes the channel, or when YouTube removes it.

How to change your YouTube handle

  1. Open YouTube Studio and choose Customization, then Profile.
  2. Under Handle, type the new handle. YouTube tells you at once if it is not available.
  3. Press Publish.

You can change your handle twice within 14 days. Your old handle stays reserved for you for 14 days, and links with either handle work during that time; after that, anyone can claim the old one. Your old handle links stop working then, so update links on other sites.

Handle, channel name, custom URL and channel ID

NameLooks likeUnique?
Handle@name, youtube.com/@nameYes, one channel each
Channel nameThe display name above the videosNo, many channels can share a name
Legacy custom URLyoutube.com/c/name or youtube.com/user/nameOld links keep working
Channel IDUC followed by 22 letters and numbersYes, never changes

To find a channel's ID from its handle, use the YouTube channel ID finder.

How accurate is this handle checker?

"Taken" is reliable: YouTube itself returned a channel for that handle. "Looks available" means YouTube returned no channel right now, which is the best public signal there is, but it is not a promise: held, reserved and policy-blocked handles look the same from outside. Our rules check follows YouTube's published rules; YouTube's own check is the final word, especially for mixed scripts. Answers are cached for up to 30 minutes, so a handle someone took a few minutes ago can still show as free.

Why we built this handle checker

Most handle checkers only say taken or free. People picking a handle also need to know why YouTube may still refuse a "free" one, what the rules are, and which close variants are open. Nitin Raja, who builds PlaylistTime, tested a lot of these pages before building this one: after testing out a lot of websites, he found what people need and what they do not, and built around that. So this checker shows the channel behind a taken handle, the rules your spelling passes or fails, and checked alternatives.

Questions

How do I check if a YouTube handle is available?

Type it into the handle checker above. It asks YouTube whether any channel uses it and checks it against YouTube's handle rules. The final check is to type it in YouTube Studio under Customization, Profile, Handle.

Why does YouTube say my handle is not available when no channel has it?

It may have been released less than 14 days ago and still be held for its old owner, it may break a naming rule, or YouTube may block it for policy reasons. Those cases look free from outside.

How many characters can a YouTube handle have?

3 to 30 characters in most languages. Han and Hangul handles can have 1 to 10, and Ethiopic, Hiragana or Katakana handles 2 to 20.

What characters are allowed in a YouTube handle?

Letters and numbers from the 75 supported languages, plus underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots. Those separators cannot be at the start or the end, and spaces are not allowed.

Are YouTube handles case-sensitive?

No. @Name and @name are the same handle. In our tests YouTube also matched a handle typed with an accent to the same handle without it.

How often can I change my YouTube handle?

Twice within 14 days. Your old handle is held for you for 14 days, then anyone can claim it.

Can I buy or claim a handle from an inactive channel?

No. YouTube does not allow handles to be sold or transferred, and there is no way to claim another channel's handle.
